                                Activity 2: Planning Assessments

I always try to use formative assessments as much as possible during the school year because it helps me better understand the students’ needs.  Some students simply need more practice than others to master knowledge or skills.  Some students are just better at speaking, while others are simply better at reading.  Teachers should always be aware of all the students’ abilities and skill level.  Those students can then be given different types of work related to the learning target and better hone their skills.

During the school year, I like to chat or question students.  I also like to use assignments, projects, worksheets, and homework sheets to assess them.  From direct observation of students doing their work to monitoring them from a distance.  Parents, students, teachers, and admins should be routinely sharing information about the quality of student work relative to the learning objectives.
There was a research that talked about formative assessments, and when teachers practice good formative assessment, students will be more involved in the class.  Thereby increasing their achievements and motivation towards learning.

There are several ways to use formative assessments to help identify what students can do with guidance and what they can do by themselves.  Implementing formative assessment involves students in active learning, and focuses them on their learning goals.  Formative assessment, especially peer evaluation and self-evaluation, helps students with the social construction of knowledge.  Formative assessment should really provide feedback on precisely what they need to improve on.

I would use 1 sentence self-assessment and peer assessment.  Allow everyone to exchange papers and correct their mistakes before giving it to their partners.

I would use oral questioning.  Allow one on one conversation with students to check their level of understanding.

I would use a quiz or simply worksheet near the end of the class to better understand their level of English.
